Currently looking for any information or who might know of my grandfather.
I am told he may have been one of the original Seabee's. He was stationed
in Juno, Alaska. Grantland Grodon (G.G.) King.

Thanks.

5th NCB on Midway

“On July 17, 1942, a detachment of the 5th Construction Battalion arrived.
This detachment of 225 men and 4 officers directed their first efforts
toward preparing living quarters for themselves and the remainder of the
battalion, which arrived during August to bring the Battalion’s totals to
550 men and 12 officers. Work was immediately begun on the construction of
an airfield and an underground hospital of reinforced concrete and steel at
Sand Island. In September 1942, two full companies of the 10th Battalion
arrived, and with these additional men, the work of developing a submarine
base on the northern tip of the island was begun.”

Excerpt from GPO Publication “Building the Navy’s Bases in World War II,
History of the Bureau of Yards and Docks and the Civil Engineering Corps
1940-1946”

Recieved this e-mail below from a shipmate looking for information. Like
him all I could come up with is July 1942. Can anyone help?

CMDCM(SCW) Kevin Eichmann
Command Master Chief
NMCB FIVE

Master Chief,
A family friend is a veteran of the 5th SeaBees who worked extensively
on Midway Island during WWII. He is in the middle stages of Alzheimer's
Disease and has few lucid moments. One area of frequent remembrance is his
time at Midway and other sites in the Pacific. His mind is stuck on a need
to remember the exact date the 5th SeaBees landed on Midway. I can't
explain his need, but would love to satisfy it for him.

I've tried "Googling" the web for info, but can only get as
close as July 1942. I'm hoping you have the historical assets available to
you to give me the exact date they first landed on Midway for duty. It's
important to him, and that translates to a level of importance for my
family and for me.

His name is Bennett Spencer and he was a Chief Carpenter's Mate, if
that helps.

Thanks in advance for your help.

ETC(SW) Brian O'Kelley
